Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. I do work by appointment so that when I am working with my clients I can give them the individual attention they deserve without interruption.
How long to I have to leave my jewelry?
I provide all appraisal services while you wait unless an item requires additional research beyond what my laboratory equipment can perform. For example: xray testing on pearls to determine if they are natural. Something like this would be sent to the GIA laboratory. Any jewelry that is left in my possession is fully insured.
What if I have a large collection of jewelry and I am nervous about traveling to you?
I have a portable lab and I can accommodate an appointment either at your residence, bank vault, attorney’s office.
How often do I need to update my appraisal?
The Insurance Institute of America recommends that jewelry be re-appraised every two years. Appraisal files are kept for seven years. I can review your appraisal and determine whether it needs to be updated via phone or e-mail but I do need to examine the item in order to provide the documentation.
How do I know if the person I select to do my appraisal is qualified?
Being a gemologist does not necessarily qualify one to be an appraiser. The organizations that I belong to require rigorous training in both gemology and valuation, mandatory continuing education, ethical standards and recertification requirements. |
